At this year’s Design Hotels Arena 2025, leaders, creators and thinkers from across the hospitality world came together to reflect on how the industry is evolving. The conversations revealed a clear direction: hospitality is moving beyond service into something deeper, a human practice rooted in connection, creativity and consciousness.
Leadership as evolution
Across generations, there is a shared understanding that leadership today is not about inheritance but about awareness. Legacy is no longer defined by preservation but by the ability to reimagine what we have built and make it relevant for the future. True leadership demands empathy, curiosity and courage, the ability to listen, empower and create meaning through action. It is measured not by control but by trust, and by the environments we create for others to thrive.

This year’s conversations were enriched by insights from the Legacy Lab, a programme designed to help the next generation of hoteliers explore their identity, heritage, and vision as future leaders. The Legacy Lab reinforced this idea: leadership is not inherited—it’s a conscious act. The next generation defines it through presence, awareness, and purpose. They reminded us that legacy is about transformation. Leadership today calls for humility, adaptability, and shared authorship—a movement from authority to empowerment, from structure to flow, and from preservation to evolution.
The generosity principle

One of the most inspiring moments of the Arena came from Will Guidara, who spoke about the essence of generosity in hospitality. His reflections on “unreasonable hospitality” reminded us that excellence is a baseline, but generosity is a choice, a way of seeing others, anticipating their needs and giving more than what is expected. Hospitality, at its core, is about presence. The smallest, most intentional gestures can become moments that people remember long after they leave. As Kalia Konstantinidou noted during the discussions:
“True hospitality begins the moment we stop thinking of service as a task and start seeing it as an act of care."

Rituals of belonging
A powerful strand of this dialogue centered on the shifting ways people seek connection today. With insights from The Future Laboratory, one of the world’s leading trend-forecasting consultancies, the conversation turned to the rituals that give modern hospitality its emotional resonance.
Their framework, The New Liturgy, reimagines hospitality as a sanctuary for modern life—a place where people reconnect with meaning, community, and self. In an age of infinite choice yet growing isolation, hotels and experiences become spaces of ritual and reflection, where small, repeatable acts of attentiveness offer grounding and renewal. These human rituals; quiet moments of presence, welcome, or connection; form the new choreography of belonging.
Technology with a human heartbeat
The dialogue also turned toward technology and the role of AI in shaping the guest journey. As Jitendra Jain, Vice President of Strategic Loyalty, Partnerships, Revenue & Commercial Intelligence in Marriott International (EMEA), emphasized, the purpose of innovation is not to replace the human element but to enhance it. When used consciously, technology gives us time back, time to connect, to notice, to be present. The future belongs to hoteliers who know how to combine intelligence with intuition, using tools that support creativity and empathy rather than dilute them.
A conscious evolution
What emerged from the Arena 2025 was a collective understanding that hospitality is entering a more intentional phase. It is no longer only about design, experience or efficiency, but about meaning, about how every choice, gesture and interaction can create belonging. Because legacy, when lived with consciousness, becomes more than continuity; it becomes connection. And the future of hospitality will belong to those who can transform that connection into a shared sense of joy and purpose.
