At this year’s Greece Talks, the panel Design, Locality and Culture explored how contemporary hospitality in Greece can evolve while remaining anchored in place.
The discussion between Kalia Konstantinidou, Group Executive Officer of Empiria Group, and Stijn Oyen, Managing Director of Design Hotels™, highlighted a shared conviction: Greece does not need to create meaning artificially. It already carries it inherently. The landscapes, traditions and everyday rhythm of life offer a rich cultural backdrop from which authentic hospitality can emerge.
The essence of greek hospitality
A key takeaway from the panel was the enduring emotional power of Greek hospitality. Rooted in generosity, empathy and genuine human warmth, it forms an emotional language guests recognise instinctively. As travelers increasingly seek sincerity and depth in their experiences, these values become even more integral to what defines Greek hospitality.

Further into the discussion, Stijn Oyen articulated this sentiment clearly:
“Greek hospitality is rooted in ancient values: generosity, empathy and human connection. It goes far beyond service. It is a cultural DNA that travelers can feel immediately, and it is what makes Greece one of the most inspiring destinations in the world.”
A new generation seeking authenticity
The dialogue also reflected a broader shift in traveler expectations, especially among younger generations. Guests now prioritize authenticity, cultural grounding and emotional resonance over traditional expressions of luxury. They respond to environments that reflect real Greek life, its simplicity, its warmth and its unhurried pace. This evolution calls for a design approach that reveals the true character of place rather than idealizing it. Hospitality becomes not an escape from reality, but an immersion into it.
Purpose and profit in alignment
The conversation then moved to the relationship between purpose and profitability. Concepts rooted in locality, imagination and cultural integrity tend to build long-term loyalty and sustain meaningful value. This alignment between intention and business outcome underscores how thoughtful design can generate both emotional impact and commercial longevity.

At this point, Kalia Konstantinidou offered a perspective on the deeper role of design in Greek hospitality:
“Design becomes meaningful only when it listens to the place. In Greece, the story already exists in the land, in the people, in the rhythm of everyday life. Our role is simply to reveal it with honesty and respect.”
Her perspective reframed design as a cultural interpretation; a way of honoring what already belongs to a destination.
The panel further explored the growing role of hotels as cultural spaces where gastronomy, craftsmanship, wellness, artistic expression and local collaborations converge. With global brand loyalty declining, emotional connection and cultural depth are increasingly defining guest choices. Greek destinations are uniquely positioned in this shift because culture is not an accessory but an everyday lived truth. This lived truth gives Greek hospitality an innate advantage: it resonates because it is real.

Human-centered hospitality
Human-centered design emerged as a guiding principle for the sector’s next chapter. Beyond form, it speaks to emotional needs such as belonging, safety, ritual and slowness. This approach allows hospitality environments to adapt to diverse traveler profiles, from Gen Z and digital nomads to modern luxury explorers, while remaining rooted in place and community.
A confident new generation of Greek hoteliers
The discussion concluded on a note of optimism for the future. Initiatives such as the Design Hotels Legacy Lab reveal a new generation of Greek hoteliers who are imaginative, conscious and deeply connected to their heritage. Their presence signals a promising shift toward a more culturally grounded and design-led future.
A future shaped by sensitivity
The overarching message of Greece Talks was clear: the future of hospitality in Greece will be shaped by sensitivity to place, culture and human experience. When design, locality and culture align, hospitality becomes more than a stay. It becomes a story that stays with guests long after they leave. This is where Greece’s true asset lies: in creating experiences that feel honest, rooted in place and profoundly human.
